How the Five Compare on the Numbers
Eight live pages already rank this pool: by needle count and needle diameter, by published width and depth, by which part the word stainless is attached to, by what each maker says about cleaning, by what happens to the needles off the stand, by the needle set, by the portafilter diameter, and by how many pieces land in a drawer. Width, depth, needles and cleaning are all taken.
Height is not, and on this pool height is the fact that sorts the shelf out, because two different tools are sold under one name. A WDT stirrer is a handle on a bundle of needles and stands up: 4.33 inches, 3.94 inches. A leveler is a disc that sits on a portafilter: 1.39 inches. One leveler here is 3.07 inches and one stirrer publishes 1.22.
What the table cannot tell you is how tall any of the three stirrers is once it is sitting in its holder, because not one of them publishes a figure for the stand. The 4.33 inch and 3.94 inch figures are the tools alone, and both of those listings describe a holder the tool drops into, so the shelf has to clear more than either number.
Two Tools Under One Name
Three Stirrers That Stand Up
Subminimal publishes 0.71 by 0.71 by 4.33 inches, which is a pen rather than a puck, and Creatomer publishes 1.18 by 1.18 by 3.94 inches. Both are handles carrying a bundle of needles, both stand upright in a holder, and both occupy a shelf the way a pepper mill does: almost no footprint and four inches of air above it.
That is a different storage problem from a leveler, and this pool does not separate the two. A stirrer has to stand because the needles must not be leaned on, so it cannot be laid flat in the space it would otherwise fit. Subminimal’s answer is retractable needles with a magnetic release, which is the only mechanism here that removes the constraint.
Two Levelers That Sit Down
MATOW publishes 2.4 by 2.4 by 1.39 inches and MHW-3BOMBER 2.94 by 2.3 by 3.07 inches. Both are discs that sit on a portafilter and level grounds by rotation, both adjust their depth by a screw, and both publish a base diameter the stirrers do not have: 53 mm for Breville 54 mm baskets, and 51 mm.
The MATOW figure is what a leveler looks like on a shelf, an inch and a half of metal taking two and a half inches of surface. The MHW-3BOMBER is the odd one out at 3.07 inches, taller than its own footprint and taller than one of the stirrers, which is the figure that breaks the neat division this page started from.
One Listing Measures It Lying Down
The NESSUS Field Order
NESSUS publishes 1.23 by 4.12 by 1.22 inches, and its size field reads 4.12 by 1.22 inches. It is a WDT stirrer like the Subminimal and the Creatomer, so the 4.12 figure is its length and the 1.22 in the height slot is its width measured with the tool lying on its side. The same object, measured flat.
That is not an error so much as a choice, and it is the only listing of these five that makes it. For a shelf it is the useful choice, because a stirrer whose needles are seated in a base with a built-in cleaner can be laid down, and 1.22 inches of clearance is a very different requirement from 4.33.
What a Holder Adds to the Figure
All three stirrers describe something the tool sits in and none measures it. Creatomer states that inserting the stirrer into the holder is what stops the needles bending, and publishes the needles precisely at 61 by 0.4 mm with spares at 61 by 0.3 mm. NESSUS publishes a base with a built-in cleaner that the needles push into.
Subminimal publishes a magnetic release mechanism and two placement options, stand-alone or otherwise, without giving either a figure or naming what the second option is. So the three published heights of 4.33, 3.94 and 1.22 inches are the tools without their stands, and the shelf space each one actually wants goes unpublished on all three listings.
What the Shelf Has to Accommodate
Needles That Must Not Be Leaned On
The reason a stirrer stands up is in Creatomer’s second bullet: inserting the tool into the holder is what keeps the needles from bending, on needles published at 61 by 0.4 mm. A 0.4 mm wire that bends is finished, and a drawer or a crowded shelf is where that happens. The listing supplies spares at 61 by 0.3 mm, which is thinner again.
Subminimal solves it rather than mitigating it, with needles stated to retract and a magnetic release that deploys them. NESSUS seats its ten 0.35 mm needles into a base that doubles as a cleaner. Three listings, three answers, and the two levelers have no needles at all so the problem does not arise for them.
The Leveler That Does Not Lie Flat
MHW-3BOMBER publishes 3.07 inches of height on a 51 mm leveler, against 1.39 inches from the other leveler on this page. Its footprint is 2.94 by 2.3 inches, so it is a tall disc rather than a flat one, and the height is adjustable by loosening the middle rim and turning it counterclockwise.
That adjustment is the likely explanation and the listing does not say so. A leveler whose depth setting runs through a threaded column is taller at full extension than one that does not, and MATOW publishes the same screw mechanism at 1.39 inches. Neither maker publishes a range, so the 3.07 figure cannot be read as a maximum or a minimum.
Which One Fits Your Kitchen
You want the needles out of the way. Subminimal. Published at 0.71 by 0.71 by 4.33 inches with retractable needles and a magnetic release, and two placement options, at a weight field of 0.18 lb.
You want the needles measured. Creatomer. Eight needles at 61 by 0.4 mm with spares at 61 by 0.3 mm, in a handmade walnut handle published at 1.18 by 1.18 by 3.94 inches, with a holder that stops them bending.
You want it to lie flat. NESSUS. The only listing here measured on its side, at 1.23 by 4.12 by 1.22 inches, with ten 0.35 mm needles seating into a base that has a built-in cleaner.
You have a Breville portafilter. MATOW. A 53 mm leveler for 54 mm Breville baskets, published at 2.4 by 2.4 by 1.39 inches, with three angled slopes and a screw depth adjustment.
Your portafilter is 51 mm. MHW-3BOMBER. A 51 mm base in 304 stainless with a diamond textured side, published at 2.94 by 2.3 by 3.07 inches, adjusted by loosening the middle rim.
What We Could Not Verify
These are the specifications we went looking for in all five listings and did not find.
- Any figure for the stand or holder on the three stirrers, each of which describes one.
- How many needles the Subminimal carries, or what diameter they are.
- Why the MHW-3BOMBER leveler publishes 3.07 inches of height when MATOW publishes 1.39.
- Any adjustment range from either leveler, both of which adjust by a screw or a rim.
- A base diameter from any of the three stirrers, and a weight from Creatomer.
- A cleaning method from four of the five; Creatomer calls its waxed walnut easy to clean without saying how, and only NESSUS publishes a built-in cleaner.
