Do vacuum sealers need special bags?

Yes. A suction vacuum sealer needs textured or embossed vacuum bags, or a bag the maker lists as compatible, because the channel pattern is what lets air escape.

By the Lush Editorial Team·Researched & Compared

Yes. A suction vacuum sealer needs bags made for vacuum sealing, usually textured or embossed bags, because the channel pattern gives air a path out of the bag while the machine pulls a vacuum. Ordinary storage bags, thin zip bags and plain plastic film do not carry that channel pattern, so the machine cannot pull air from them the way it does from a vacuum bag.

The makers back this up in their own published notes. Gasbye states that its VS5166 works with any textured or embossed vacuum sealer bags from other brands, and that it does not recommend reusable zipper bags. FoodSaver lists its machine as operational with all other FoodSaver bags, rolls and accessories.

Why the bag has to be textured

A vacuum sealer pulls air from the open end of the bag. In a smooth bag, the plastic walls collapse flat against each other and against the food, and the remaining air has nowhere to travel. Textured or embossed bags hold a small network of channels against the food, so air keeps moving toward the machine until the seal bar closes. That is the whole reason vacuum bags look different from a plain freezer bag.

The bag guides show the same construction. Wevac describes its 8 by 12 inch precut bags as having embossed channels to increase suction. Bonsenkitchen describes its rolls as 4 mil heavy duty bags with embossed air-removal channels, and notes deeper air passages than other brands for a better seal. Those channels are a published feature of the bag, not a claim about how it performs in a kitchen.

This is also why a maker’s compatibility note matters more than the bag’s general description. Gasbye’s published answer says the VS5166 is compatible with any textured or embossed vacuum sealer bags from other brands, and adds that some low-cost bags may be thinner and more prone to punctures from frozen or sharp foods. Thickness and channel depth are the two things to look for in a listing.

What the sealer makers publish about bag fit

Several picks in Best Vacuum Sealers for Dry and Moist Food ship with bags, which tells you the format the machine expects. The Gasbye kit includes 5 precut 8 by 12 inch bags and two 11 inch by 10 foot rolls. The FoodSaver Compact kit includes one 11 inch by 8 foot roll, 3 quart-sized vacuum seal bags and 2 gallon-sized vacuum seal bags, and FoodSaver states the machine is operational with all other FoodSaver bags, rolls and accessories.

NESCO takes a different route and includes rolls rather than precut bags: the VS-12 kit lists one 8.6 inch by 9.85 foot roll and one 11.8 inch by 9.85 foot roll. The machine also has built-in roll storage and a sliding bag cutter, so you cut a bag to length from the roll and seal one end yourself before filling. Beelicious Pro lists roll storage and bag cutting among its features too, without publishing roll dimensions.

The Chef Preserve pick is the exception in format. It is a handheld unit sold with 30 reusable vacuum bags, 15 small and 15 medium, and the maker describes those bags as dishwasher, freezer, refrigerator and microwave safe and BPA free. That is a bag system built around one device, so the bags that come with it are the bags to use.

Rolls and precut bags both work

Rolls and precut bags do the same job, and the choice comes down to how much you cut and seal yourself. A roll lets you size the bag to the food. FoodSaver’s multipack in Best Vacuum Sealer Bags for Rolls and Precut Options contains two 8 by 20 inch heat seal rolls and three 11 by 16 inch heat seal rolls, and the maker describes cutting the roll to your desired length. Bonsenkitchen sells 3 rolls at 8 inches by 20 feet and 3 rolls at 11 inches by 20 feet, and xinbaolong publishes the same roll pairing.

Precut bags skip the cutting and the first seal. Wevac’s 200-count box holds 8 by 12 inch precut bags in a keeper box, and the maker states the bags work with all suction vacuum heat sealers, naming Food Saver, Seal a meal, Weston, Cabela’s and Ziploc. That is a broad compatibility statement, and it is the kind of sentence to look for when you are matching bags to a machine the bag maker has never heard of.

One accessory in the bag guide is not a bag at all. The MorningRo bag holder stand measures 7.9 inches long, 7.9 inches wide and 11.8 inches high, with a 7 inch circular opening, and the maker states it is designed for 1 gallon bags and standard 12 by 16 inch vacuum bags. It holds a bag open while you fill it and keeps the sealing zone clear.

Can you reuse bags or use zipper bags?

Reusable bags exist, but they are a separate system. Gasbye publishes a direct answer on zipper bags: it does not recommend reusable zipper bags, citing food safety concerns about bacteria retained in bags that previously held food and difficulty removing it through routine cleaning. That is the maker’s stated position, and it applies to that machine’s recommended use.

Some vacuum bags are sold as reusable in their own right. Bonsenkitchen states its roll bags can be microwaved, frozen, re-used, washed, boiled and dishwasher safe, and that they can be used for sous vide in water up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit. FoodSaver describes its rolls as BPA free material safe for the freezer, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher. Read the bag listing rather than assuming, because reuse language varies from one product to the next.

What you should not do is treat a plain zip-top storage bag as a vacuum bag. It has no embossed channels, and the sealer has no way to pull air through it. If a bag is not sold as a vacuum bag and the sealer maker does not list it as compatible, it is outside what the published instructions cover.

Matching bags to your machine

Start with the format the machine was built around. If the sealer has built-in roll storage and a cutter, as the Gasbye, NESCO and Beelicious Pro picks do, rolls are the natural fit. If it is a compact unit that ships with precut bags, as the FoodSaver Compact does, precut bags in the listed sizes are the simplest match. The FoodSaver kit’s quart and gallon bags show the two sizes that machine is set up for.

Then check the maker’s compatibility line. Gasbye’s is the most specific in the sealer guide: any textured or embossed bag from other brands, with a caution that thin bags puncture more easily around frozen or sharp food. FoodSaver’s is brand-bound: all other FoodSaver bags, rolls and accessories. Wevac’s is the broadest in the bag guide, covering all suction vacuum heat sealers.

Where a maker publishes nothing, this site has not compared it. Beelicious Pro does not publish bag dimensions or a compatibility statement for third-party bags in its listed features, and Chef Preserve does not publish the dimensions of its 30 included bags. For those two, the bags supplied with the unit are the only ones the published material describes.

Common questions

Can I use regular freezer bags in a vacuum sealer?

No. A regular freezer bag is smooth, so the walls collapse together and trap air instead of letting the machine pull it out. Vacuum bags are textured or embossed to keep air moving toward the seal bar. Gasbye states its VS5166 works with any textured or embossed vacuum sealer bags from other brands, which is the standard to match.

Are vacuum sealer bags reusable?

Some are sold that way. Bonsenkitchen states its roll bags can be re-used, washed, boiled and are dishwasher safe, and FoodSaver describes its rolls as safe for the freezer, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher. Gasbye separately states it does not recommend reusable zipper bags, citing food safety concerns about bacteria retained in bags that held food before.

Do all vacuum sealers take the same bags?

No. Compatibility statements differ by maker. FoodSaver lists its Compact machine as operational with all other FoodSaver bags, rolls and accessories, which ties it to one brand family. Wevac states its precut bags work with all suction vacuum heat sealers and names Food Saver, Seal a meal, Weston, Cabela's and Ziploc. Gasbye accepts any textured or embossed bag.

What sizes do vacuum sealer bags come in?

The picks publish several. FoodSaver's multipack has two 8 by 20 inch rolls and three 11 by 16 inch rolls. Wevac sells 8 by 12 inch precut bags in a 200 count box. Bonsenkitchen and xinbaolong both list 8 inch by 20 foot and 11 inch by 20 foot rolls. The Gasbye kit includes 5 precut 8 by 12 inch bags and two 11 inch by 10 foot rolls.

Do I need a bag holder to vacuum seal?

No, but one can help with liquids and loose food. The MorningRo stand measures 7.9 inches long, 7.9 inches wide and 11.8 inches high with a 7 inch circular opening, and the maker states it is designed for 1 gallon bags and standard 12 by 16 inch vacuum bags. It holds the bag open and keeps the sealing zone clear while you fill it.

Can I vacuum seal liquids in a bag?

Only within what the machine and bag are built for. Several sealers list a moist food mode, and Gasbye sells a compatible vacuum food container for marinated meats and saucy foods so liquid is not pulled into the machine. A bag holder that keeps the sealing zone clean also helps. Check the bag listing for sous vide and boiling limits before sealing wet food.
