Each pick in detail

What the listing says for it, and against it.
1 Best for a desk with a shelf above it

Mixpresso Coffee Canister

Sixteen ounces at published fields of 5.2 by 5.2 by 6 inches, the lowest of these five, sealed by what the maker calls a triple seal of clamp lid, food grade silicone gasket and one way CO2 valve, with a rotating date dial on the lid and a matching scoop, at 1.1 pounds empty.

  • For it
  • At 6 inches high it is the lowest canister here, which suits a shelf above a desk
  • Names three separate sealing elements: clamp lid, silicone gasket and one way valve
  • A rotating date dial on the lid and a matching scoop included
  • States 16 oz and gives the same figure as about 450 g
  • Against it
  • The smallest capacity here, so a large bag will not fit in one go
  • Hand washing is recommended rather than a dishwasher
  • Names food grade stainless without specifying a grade
2 Best for the tightest footprint and spare parts

Ohtomber 22oz Stainless Steel Airtight Coffee Canist...

Twenty two ounces in 304 stainless at 4.96 by 4.96 by 7.24 inches, the tightest circle here, with a locking lid, a one way venting valve, a calendar date dial on the lid, a 30 ml scoop and four replacement valves, which no other listing in this pool supplies.

  • For it
  • At 4.96 inches across it takes the tightest circle of desk space here
  • The only pick that includes spare parts, four replacement valves
  • Names 304 stainless steel and claims light and heat shielding
  • A calendar date dial on the lid and a 30 ml scoop included
  • Against it
  • Publishes no size in its own bullets, only in the dimension fields
  • Publishes no washing instruction of any kind
  • Names no gasket material, where two rivals name silicone
3 Best for beans that will sit a fortnight

Planetary Design Airscape Stainless Steel Coffee Can...

About 1 pound of whole bean, given also as 500 g, at a stated 5 inches wide by 7 inches high, with a patented inner plunger lid and a two way valve that pushes the air out of the canister as it descends rather than venting it slowly, at 1 pound empty.

  • For it
  • The only pick that removes air mechanically rather than venting it
  • States its size twice, as 5 inches wide by 7 inches high
  • At 1 pound empty it is the lightest canister here
  • States the capacity as a weight of beans, about 1 lb or 500 g
  • Against it
  • No date tracker and no scoop in the box
  • Makes no light blocking claim at all, unlike four rivals
  • Only four feature bullets, the fewest of these five
4 Best for a whole bag with the date on top

Veken Coffee Canister

Thirty nine ounces in 304 stainless at 5.6 by 5.6 by 8.9 inches, stated to hold 35.2 ounces of whole beans, with a window free body the maker says blocks sunlight, a one way CO2 valve on a silicone rubber seal, a date tracker dial and a stainless scoop with a hook.

  • For it
  • Names 304 stainless and states a window free design that blocks sunlight
  • A one way CO2 valve paired with a silicone rubber seal
  • A date tracker on the lid and a stainless scoop with a hook
  • Six feature bullets, the most of these five
  • Against it
  • At 8.9 inches it stands higher than any other pick here
  • Its title says 39 oz while a bullet says 35.2 oz of beans and 42 oz of ground
  • Publishes no washing instruction
5 Best looking canister for a visible desk

Airtight Coffee Canister 40 oz

Forty ounces of iron with a matte black powder coated finish and a rubber lined bamboo lid, stated at 6 by 8 inches and square rather than round so it sits flush against a wall, with a metal handle and a lid the maker says shuts tight but opens easily.

  • For it
  • Square rather than round, which its own bullet argues saves space against a wall
  • A rubber lined bamboo lid with a metal handle, stated to open easily
  • Forty ounces, the largest stated volume among these five
  • States it keeps out air, moisture, light and heat
  • Against it
  • Publishes no valve of any kind, so carbon dioxide has nowhere to go
  • No date tracker and no scoop included
  • At 1.34 pounds empty it is the heaviest pick here

Our verdict

Mixpresso is the desk pick: 16 ounces at 5.2 inches across and 6 inches high, the lowest stature here, with a clamp lid, a silicone gasket and a one way CO2 valve, a rotating date dial and a scoop. Ohtomber is tighter across at 4.96 inches and includes four spare valves. Airscape pushes the air out with a plunger lid. Veken holds 39 ounces. HB Design is square, in powder coated iron with a bamboo lid.

“One listing ships spare valves. Nobody says how long one lasts.”

Lush Editorial Team

What separates these five

Footprints differ by an inch Ohtomber is 4.96 inches across, Airscape 5, Mixpresso 5.2, Veken 5.6 and HB Design 5.9. On a desk that is the whole decision.
Heights run 6 to 8.9 inches Mixpresso is 6 inches high and Veken 8.9. Anything going under a shelf has to clear the lid as well as the body.
Two ways to handle the air Three picks vent carbon dioxide through a one way valve. Airscape pushes a plunger lid down and forces the air out instead.
One pick ships spares Ohtomber includes four replacement valves. No other listing mentions a spare part or says how long a valve lasts.
Three put a date on the lid Mixpresso, Ohtomber and Veken all fit a date dial. Airscape and HB Design publish none, and nothing else tells you the age.

How we chose

Priorities, not a computed score. The inputs are published specifications, so we rank by what matters most and say how much.

  1. 30% The footprint and the heightA desk has an edge and often a shelf, so the two figures that decide this are how wide the circle is and how tall the lid sits. These five run from 4.96 to 5.9 inches across and from 6 to 8.9 inches high, which is a bigger spread than the capacities suggest.
  2. 25% How the carbon dioxide gets outFresh beans give off gas, and a sealed container with nowhere for it to go will push it past the gasket. Three picks fit a one way valve, Airscape removes the air mechanically with a plunger lid, and HB Design publishes no mechanism at all.
  3. 20% Capacity, and whether the figure is comparableFour listings quote a fluid volume and one quotes a weight of beans, so the numbers cannot be lined up. Veken quotes three different figures for its own contents, and the practical question on a desk is whether one retail bag fits.
  4. 15% Whether the beans sit in the darkLight degrades coffee and four of these five say something about it, with Veken calling its body window free and Ohtomber claiming light and heat shielding. A clear lidded listing in this pool was dropped for exactly this reason.
  5. 10% The small things that change behaviorA date dial on the lid is the only feature here that tells you the coffee is three weeks old, and three picks have one. A scoop that lives in the canister is the other, and the two picks without either are bought for what they are made of.

How the Five Compare on the Numbers

Three listings were dropped. Oggi is 62 fluid ounces with a clear see through lid, larger than anything picked here and glass topped where two picks state outright that they block the light. Yangbaga is two glass jars on a wooden stand, a counter display rather than a desk object. The AirScape Kilo is the same patented design as the Airscape already here, published under a second brand.

The AirScape Kilo is worth one more sentence, because its published weight is 2.2 pounds and that figure is lifted straight out of its own title, where it describes how much coffee the canister holds. It is not the weight of the canister. Every weight quoted below is a single empty container, which makes this one of the few pools where weight can be compared at all.

What the table cannot tell you is how the capacities relate, because they are not quoted in the same unit. Four listings give a fluid volume in ounces and Airscape gives a weight of beans, about 1 pound or 500 grams, and whole beans are light enough that the two figures cannot be converted by eye. Nobody publishes a gasket material life either, or how often a one way valve needs replacing, which is the part that fails first.

Footprint, Height, and What a Desk Can Take

Under Five Inches Across, or Nearly Six

Ohtomber publishes the tightest circle here at 4.96 inches across, with a height of 7.24 inches. Airscape publishes 5 inches across and 7 inches high, and states the figures again in a bullet. Mixpresso is 5.2 inches across and 6 inches high, the lowest of these five and the one that will slide under a shelf on a desk rather than beside it.

The two large canisters ask for more room in different directions. Veken is 5.6 inches across and 8.9 inches tall, so it is the standing object of the group. HB Design is 5.9 inches across and 7.8 tall, and it is square rather than round, which its own bullet argues is space saving because a square sits flush against a wall where a circle leaves gaps.

Capacity Against the Space It Costs

Mixpresso holds 16 ounces, which is roughly one retail bag of beans, and that is the honest desk answer: coffee kept at a desk should be turned over quickly rather than stored. Ohtomber holds 22 ounces in a body only a fraction wider. Both come with a scoop and a date dial, so they are the same idea at two sizes.

Veken and HB Design hold 39 and 40 ounces, and both publish numbers worth reading twice. Veken’s title says 39 ounces while its first bullet says the canister holds up to 35.2 ounces of whole beans and 42 ounces of ground, which is a volume figure sitting beside two weight figures. HB Design states 40 ounces and gives its size only as 6 by 8 inches.

Two Ways to Get the Air Out

The One Way Valve

Mixpresso, Ohtomber and Veken all take the same approach: seal the lid, then let carbon dioxide escape through a one way valve while nothing comes back in. Mixpresso calls it a triple seal system, naming the clamp lid, the food grade silicone gasket and the valve as three separate elements. Veken pairs its valve with a silicone rubber seal and states that it releases air without oxidation.

Ohtomber is the only one that admits the valve is a consumable. Its package includes four replacement valves alongside a 30 ml scoop, which is a quiet acknowledgment that a one way valve is a membrane and membranes clog or stiffen. No other listing in this pool mentions a spare part of any kind, or says how long a valve is expected to work.

The Plunger Lid

Airscape does something structurally different. A patented inner lid is pushed down onto the beans and a two way valve on that plunger lets the trapped air out as it descends, so the air is physically removed rather than allowed to leave slowly. The listing describes a swoosh as the sound of it happening, and the outer lid then closes over the top.

The trade is mechanical rather than theoretical. A plunger has to be pushed down every time the level drops, so it is a canister that asks something of you each morning, and it is the only pick here with no date tracker and no scoop in the box. What it does buy is an interior with the headspace taken out of it, which no valve can achieve.

Lids, Light, and What Gets Left Out

Bamboo, Clamps, and Powder Coated Iron

HB Design is the outlier on materials. It is iron with a matte black powder coated finish rather than stainless steel, with a rubber lined bamboo lid and a metal handle, and it is square. Its bullet states the lid closes tightly but opens easily, which is the opposite complaint people have about clamp lids, and it publishes no valve at all.

That absence is the thing to weigh. With no one way valve, carbon dioxide coming off fresh beans has nowhere to go except past the rubber seal, and the listing makes no claim about that. For coffee bought weekly rather than roasted last Thursday it hardly matters, and the square footprint and the bamboo lid are real advantages on a visible desk.

Date Trackers and Sunlight

Three of the five put a date dial on the lid: Mixpresso as a rotating lid dial, Ohtomber as a calendar date dial, and Veken as a date tracker for a storage or expiry date. It is a small feature and it is the one that changes behavior, because a bag opened three weeks ago tastes different and nothing else on the canister tells you.

Four of the five claim to block light. Veken is the most specific, calling its design window free so no sunlight reaches the beans, and Ohtomber claims light and heat shielding. Airscape claims neither, which is odd for stainless steel, and it is the reason the clear lidded Oggi listing was left off this page entirely.

Which One Fits Your Kitchen

A desk with a shelf above it. Mixpresso is 16 ounces at 5.2 inches across and 6 inches high, the lowest stature here, with a clamp lid, a silicone gasket and a one way CO2 valve it calls a triple seal, plus a rotating date dial and a matching scoop. It asks to be hand washed.

The tightest footprint with a spare part in the box. Ohtomber is 22 ounces at 4.96 inches across and 7.24 high in 304 stainless, with a locking lid, a one way venting valve, a calendar date dial, a 30 ml scoop and four replacement valves, which no other pick supplies.

Beans that will sit for a fortnight. Airscape is about 1 pound of whole bean at 5 inches wide and 7 inches high, with a patented inner plunger lid that pushes the air out of the canister rather than venting it slowly. At 1 pound empty it is the lightest pick, and it has no date dial and no scoop.

A whole kilo bag with the date on the lid. Veken is 39 ounces at 5.6 inches across and 8.9 inches tall in 304 stainless, holding a stated 35.2 ounces of whole beans, with a window free body that blocks sunlight, a one way CO2 valve, a date tracker and a stainless scoop with a hook.

A visible desk where it has to look right. HB Design is 40 ounces of powder coated iron with a rubber lined bamboo lid and a metal handle, stated at 6 by 8 inches and square so it sits flush against a wall. At 1.34 pounds it is the heaviest here, and it publishes no valve.

What We Could Not Verify

These are the figures that decide how long coffee stays drinkable in one of these, and the pool does not publish them.

  • The capacities are not in one unit: four listings give fluid ounces and Airscape gives a weight of beans, so they cannot be compared directly.
  • Veken’s title says 39 oz while its first bullet says it holds 35.2 oz of whole beans and 42 oz of ground.
  • Nobody publishes how long a one way valve lasts, and only Ohtomber acknowledges it is replaceable by including spares.
  • HB Design publishes no valve of any kind, and makes no claim about carbon dioxide escaping past its rubber seal.
  • No listing publishes a gasket material or a service life for the seal, which is the other part that fails.
  • Airscape makes no light blocking claim at all, where three of the other four state one explicitly.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these takes up the least desk space?+

It depends which direction is tight. Ohtomber measures 4.96 inches across, with Airscape at 5 inches and Mixpresso at 5.2. If the constraint is height, Mixpresso is the one to take at 6 inches, since Airscape is 7 inches, Ohtomber 7.24, HB Design 7.8 and Veken 8.9. HB Design is the only square canister, and its own bullet argues that a square sits flush against a wall where a circle leaves gaps.

What is the difference between a valve and a plunger lid?+

A one way valve lets carbon dioxide leave a sealed canister without letting air back in, which Mixpresso, Ohtomber and Veken all rely on. Airscape instead pushes an inner lid down onto the beans, and a two way valve on that plunger lets the trapped air out as it descends, so the headspace is physically removed. A valve is passive and needs nothing from you. A plunger has to be pushed down again every time the level drops.

Do these canisters keep light off the beans?+

Four of the five claim to. Veken is the most specific, calling its design window free so no sunlight reaches the beans at all. Ohtomber claims light and heat shielding, Mixpresso claims to block air, light and moisture, and HB Design claims to keep out air, moisture, light and heat. Airscape makes no light claim anywhere in its four bullets. A clear lidded listing in this pool was left off the page for the same reason.

How much coffee do these actually hold?+

The figures are not comparable, which is worth knowing before you order. Mixpresso states 16 ounces and about 450 grams, Ohtomber 22 ounces, Veken 39 ounces in its title, and HB Design 40 ounces. Airscape states a weight of beans instead, about 1 pound or 500 grams, and whole beans are too light to convert between the two by eye. Veken separately says it holds 35.2 ounces of whole beans, which is a third figure.

Does the one way valve wear out?+

Ohtomber is the only listing that behaves as though it does, and it includes four replacement valves in the box alongside a 30 ml scoop. That is a quiet admission that the valve is a membrane and membranes clog, stiffen or stop sealing. Mixpresso and Veken both rely on a one way valve and mention no spare and no service life. Nobody in this pool publishes how long one is expected to work.

Is a date tracker on the lid worth anything?+

It is the only feature here that changes what you do. Coffee three weeks past opening tastes different from coffee three days past, and nothing about a sealed steel canister tells you which you have. Mixpresso fits a rotating lid dial, Ohtomber a calendar date dial, and Veken a date tracker for a storage or expiry date. Airscape and HB Design publish none, so the date has to live somewhere else.
