How the Five Compare on the Numbers
The clearest difference among these five sets is capacity. The MICHELANGELO, EWFEN and RATWIA sets each cover 1, 2 and 3 quarts. The CAROTE set covers 1.5 and 3 quarts, the SENSARTE set covers 1.5 and 2.5 quarts, and the HooJay set covers 2 and 3 quarts. A set that skips the size you need cannot be fixed later, so the quart range is the first thing to check.
Weight is published for three of the five. The MICHELANGELO set is the lightest at 4.6 pounds, the CAROTE set is 5.78 pounds, the SENSARTE set is 5.8 pounds, the HooJay set is 6.0 pounds, the RATWIA set is 7.56 pounds and the EWFEN set is the heaviest at 8.09 pounds. The CAROTE and SENSARTE makers publish no weight, so those two cannot be placed on that scale.
The table does not tell you how any of these pans heats. No maker publishes a heat distribution figure, a wall thickness or a base thickness. The base and core rows are the maker’s own description of construction, not a measurement. The table also cannot tell you how a coating wears, because none of the makers publishes a wear figure.
Capacity and What Each Set Leaves Out
The three-size sets
The MICHELANGELO, EWFEN and RATWIA sets each cover 1, 2 and 3 quarts. That range covers a small milk pan, a mid-size pan for oatmeal or eggs, and a larger pan for pasta or family side dishes. The MICHELANGELO maker lists those uses directly, pairing the 1 quart with milk, tea, coffee and butter, the 2 quart with oatmeal, ramen, soup and eggs, and the 3 quart with pasta, rice and vegetables.
The EWFEN maker pairs each pan with a dedicated lid and describes the set as covering a full range of culinary needs. The RATWIA maker describes the same three sizes for home kitchen and restaurant use. If your cooking regularly moves between a single serving and a family portion, these three sets are the only ones on the sheet that cover both ends without a gap in the middle.
The two-size sets
The CAROTE set covers 1.5 and 3 quarts, so it skips both the 1 quart and the 2 quart size. The SENSARTE set covers 1.5 and 2.5 quarts, the smallest capacities of the five, and the maker describes it as suited to one to three people. The HooJay set covers 2 and 3 quarts, so it has no small pan for a single serving of milk or a single egg.
None of these three is worse on capacity alone. Each simply draws the line in a different place. A cook who mostly makes two servings will find the SENSARTE pair sufficient. A cook who needs a 1 quart pan for sauces and a 3 quart pan for pasta will find the CAROTE pair covers both ends but nothing between them.
Surface, Lid and Handle Details
Uncoated stainless steel
The MICHELANGELO and EWFEN sets are uncoated 304 stainless steel. The MICHELANGELO maker states the set has no chemical nonstick coating and describes it as a safer and healthier choice than coated aluminum pans. The EWFEN maker describes a 304 stainless steel interior, a 430 stainless steel exterior and an aluminum core, and states the cooking surface is food grade.
Both makers list dishwasher safety. The MICHELANGELO maker adds that the surface is easy to clean after warming milk or making oatmeal, and that better stick-resistant results come from proper preheating and enough oil. That is a use note, not a performance claim, and it is the only guidance the maker gives on the surface.
Nonstick coatings and lids
The RATWIA, CAROTE, SENSARTE and HooJay sets use a nonstick coating. The CAROTE maker states the coating is PFOA free and describes a rivetless design that keeps food from getting stuck. The SENSARTE maker states the coating is free of intentionally added PFOA and PFOS and describes a rivetless interior. The RATWIA maker describes a double-coated, scratch-resistant interior and asks for nylon, silicone or wooden utensils.
Lid material splits the same way. The MICHELANGELO and EWFEN sets use stainless steel lids, and the MICHELANGELO maker notes the metal knob may become hot and asks for oven mitts. The RATWIA, CAROTE, SENSARTE and HooJay sets use tempered glass lids. The EWFEN maker attaches a specific warning about inserting the lid handle screws from the inside outward.
Which One Fits Your Kitchen
Buy the MICHELANGELO set if you want uncoated stainless steel in three sizes. It covers 1, 2 and 3 quarts, uses a tri-ply base, and at 4.6 pounds it is the lightest of the five. The maker lists dishwasher safety.
Buy the EWFEN set if you want a three-ply build with an aluminum core. It covers 1, 2 and 3 quarts with a 304 stainless steel interior and a 430 stainless steel exterior, and the maker lists gas, electric, induction, ceramic and glass cooktops.
Buy the RATWIA set if you want a nonstick coating across three sizes. It covers 1, 2 and 3 quarts in aluminum alloy with a multi-layer coating and tempered glass lids. The maker suggests induction or a medium gas flame.
Buy the CAROTE set if pouring matters to you. It covers 1.5 and 3 quarts and adds a pouring spout for oil or sauce, with a rivetless nonstick interior and a wooden grip. It skips the 1 quart and 2 quart sizes.
Buy the SENSARTE set if you cook for one or two people. It covers 1.5 and 2.5 quarts, the smallest capacities of the five, with a cast aluminum core and a stainless steel base. The maker lists oven safety to 302 degrees Fahrenheit.
What We Could Not Verify
Several figures that would help a buyer are simply not published by the makers. These are the ones we looked for and could not source.
- No maker publishes a heat distribution figure, so the base and core descriptions cannot be compared as numbers.
- The CAROTE maker does not publish a weight for its set.
- The SENSARTE maker does not publish a weight for its set.
- The KOCH SYSTEME CS maker publishes no width, depth, height or weight, which is why that set is not among the five.
- No maker publishes the thickness of the pan wall or the base.
- No maker publishes a coating wear figure or a stated number of use cycles.
