How are pressure cookers made start to finish?
Makers do not publish their full manufacturing process, but the published specifications of the cookers this site compares show what the finished build has to deliver: a pressure vessel, a locking lid, a vent and a gauge or control system.
By the Lush Editorial Team·Researched & Compared
No pressure cooker maker in this site’s comparison publishes a start to finish account of how its cookers are built, so the honest answer is that the manufacturing sequence is not public. What the published specifications do show is the set of parts every cooker has to end up with: a pressure vessel, a locking lid, a vent or release, a gauge or control system, and handles.
This page sets out those parts as the makers describe them in the picks compared in Best Pressure Cookers for Canning and Fast Meals, and explains what each stage of the build has to produce.
The pressure vessel comes first
Every cooker starts with the pot itself, because everything else is built to seal against it. The two stovetop canners in the guide state aluminum bodies. Presto describes the Presto 01781 23-Quart Pressure Canner and Cooker as constructed of warp-resistant heavy-gauge aluminum for fast, even heating, and T-fal describes the T-fal 22-Quart Aluminum Pressure Canner as durable aluminum construction with even heating. Aluminum is the material both makers name for the vessel.
The electric cookers take a different route. Instant Pot states that the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt has a cooking pot crafted from stainless steel (18/8) with a tri-ply bottom, and Midea states that the Midea 12-in-1 8 Quarts has a stainless steel inner pot. Cosori states that the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT has a ceramic coating inner pot. In each case the maker names the material the food contacts, which is the part of the build a buyer can check.
Size is set at this stage too. The Presto is listed at 23 Quarts and measures 17.5 inches wide, 13.5 inches deep and 15.5 inches high, at 12.0 pounds. The T-fal is listed at 22 Quarts and measures 15.39 inches wide, 19.33 inches deep and 16.26 inches high, at 14.77 pounds. The Instant Pot Duo is listed at 6 Quarts and measures 12.6 inches wide, 13.0 inches deep and 12.2 inches high, at 14.6 pounds.
The lid and the lock
A pressure cooker only works if the lid holds. T-fal states that its canner has a secure locking lid, and Cosori describes the closing routine on the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT: align the orange dot on the lid with the orange dot on the base and twist clockwise. That dot alignment is a build detail, since the marks have to be placed so the lid seats in one position only.
Instant Pot states that the Duo has an easy seal safety lid lock among its safety mechanisms, and that the lid is dishwasher safe. Cosori states that its lid is dishwasher safe and that the cooker has a double-layer anti-scalding lid. Those statements describe what the finished lid has to do, not the order in which it is assembled.
The canners carry jar loads that the lid and vessel have to hold. Presto states a mason jar capacity of 26 half-pints, 20 pints and 7 quarts. T-fal states it holds up to 24 half-pint jars, 16 wide-mouth pint jars, 18 pint jars, or 7 quart jars per batch. Those loads are the reason the canner bodies are as large as the dimensions above show.
Vents, valves and steam release
The vent is the part that makes pressure usable rather than dangerous, and each maker describes its own arrangement. T-fal states a beginner-friendly steam release valve and an easy-to-read gauge. Instant Pot states an Easy-Release steam switch for fast, safe and simple steam release. Cosori states a Seal/Vent button set away from the steam release valve and a 30 degree backward-angled steam release design.
Midea states that the Midea 12-in-1 8 Quarts is equipped with the REALSAFE SYSTEM, a 12-in-1 safety protection with pressure limit, over temperature and overpressure automatic release. That is a description of the release path built into the appliance, and it is the closest any of the electric makers comes to describing the internal pressure controls.
On the stovetop side, Presto states that the deluxe pressure dial gauge registers the complete range of processing pressures, and notes that the measurement matters at higher altitudes. A gauge of that kind is a separate part fitted to the lid, and the maker does not publish how it is fitted.
Controls and electrical parts
The electric cookers add a base, a heating element and a control board, and the makers publish some of those figures. Instant Pot states that the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt is 1000 watts, 120 V 60 Hz, UL and ULC Listed, with 13 one-touch programs and over 10 safety mechanisms including overheat protection. Those are the electrical and control specifications the build has to meet.
Midea states multiple cooking modes with one-touch cooking and customizable smart programs on the Midea 12-in-1 8 Quarts, and Cosori states 12 safety features on the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT, including overheat protection. Neither maker publishes wattage, voltage or the internal layout of the control section.
Where a maker publishes nothing, this site says so. Cosori does not publish width, depth or height for the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT, only a weight of 11.9 pounds. Midea does not publish a weight for the Midea 12-in-1 8 Quarts, only dimensions of 11.6 inches wide, 11.1 inches deep and 11.6 inches high.
Finish, handles and what is not published
The last stages of any build are the outside and the parts a hand touches. Cosori states a stainless steel, fingerprint-resistant housing and a 0.5-inch widened pot gap on the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT. T-fal states sturdy handles for safe, comfortable handling on its canner. Presto states that its canner works on regular and smooth-top ranges and includes a canning and cooking rack and a 76-page instruction and recipe book.
What none of the five makers publishes is the sequence: how the vessel is formed, how the lid is fitted, how the vent is assembled or how the unit is checked before packing. This site has not compared that process for any of them, and nobody here has taken a cooker apart. The published figures above are what the makers state about the finished product.
Read together, they show the shape of the job. A vessel in aluminum or stainless steel, a lid that locks and seals, a vent or release path, a gauge or control system, and handles and housing to finish. The order in which a given factory does those steps is not in any published specification this site has compared.
Common questions
Do pressure cooker makers publish their manufacturing process?
None of the five makers in this site's comparison publishes a start to finish account of how its cookers are built. The published specifications describe the finished parts: the vessel material, the lid and lock, the vent or release, and the gauge or control system. The assembly sequence itself is not published by any of them.
What materials do the cookers use for the pot?
Presto states heavy-gauge aluminum for the Presto 01781 23-Quart Pressure Canner and Cooker, and T-fal states aluminum construction for the T-fal 22-Quart Aluminum Pressure Canner. Instant Pot states a stainless steel (18/8) pot with a tri-ply bottom on the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt, Midea states a stainless steel inner pot on the Midea 12-in-1 8 Quarts, and Cosori states a ceramic coating inner pot on the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT.
How does the lid lock on these cookers?
Cosori describes the routine on the Cosori Pressure Cooker 6QT: align the orange dot on the lid with the orange dot on the base and twist clockwise. T-fal states a secure locking lid on its canner. Instant Pot states an easy seal safety lid lock among the safety mechanisms on the Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt. The makers do not publish how the lock is assembled.
How is steam released on an electric pressure cooker?
