How to Clean an Air Fryer

A simple step-by-step guide to keep your air fryer fresh, safe and working like new.

A Tastier Tomorrow

Why Cleaning Your Air Fryer Matters

Regular cleaning keeps your air fryer performing at its best, prevents unpleasant smells, and helps your food taste the way it should. Baked-on grease is the most common cause of smoking, and left long enough it shortens the life of the heating element.

“A clean air fryer means better food, a healthier kitchen, and a longer-lasting appliance.”

What You’ll Need

Mild dish soap
Soft sponge
or cloth
Warm water
Non-abrasive
brush
Microfiber towel

Step-by-Step Cleaning Guide

1Unplug and Cool Down

Always unplug your air fryer and let it cool completely before cleaning. A warm basket is easier to wipe than a cold one, but a hot element is a burn risk.

2Wash the Basket and Crisper Plate

Soak both in warm soapy water for ten minutes, then wipe with a soft sponge. Skip steel wool, it strips the non-stick coating.

3Wipe the Interior

Use a damp cloth on the cavity walls and the drawer housing. Never submerge the main unit, and keep water away from the vents.

4Clean the Heating Element

Turn the unit upside down so you can reach the coil, then brush away baked-on grease with a soft non-abrasive brush.

5Dry Everything Fully

Dry each part with a microfiber towel and leave the basket out until it is completely dry before reassembling.

Deep Cleaning Tips

The five steps above are the weekly routine. Roughly once a month, or sooner if you smell last week’s dinner while preheating, the machine needs more than a wipe.

Baked-on grease on the element

Turn the unit upside down on a towel so the heating coil faces you. Make a paste of bicarbonate of soda and a little water, work it into the deposits with a soft brush, leave it ten minutes, then lift it off with a damp cloth. Do not soak the area and do not use anything that scratches: the coil and its housing are not coated for abrasion.

The drawer housing

Grease drips past the basket and collects in the cavity underneath, which is the part most owners never look at. Pull the basket right out and check the floor of the housing. A damp cloth handles it if you do this regularly; if it has been months, a cloth with a drop of dish soap and some patience is the answer.

Smells that will not shift

Run the unit empty at a moderate temperature with half a lemon in the basket for five minutes, then wipe it out while it is still warm. This is a household technique rather than a manufacturer instruction, so check your manual allows an empty run first. Several models specifically ask you not to operate them empty.

The mesh and vents

Air fryers pull air through an intake and push it out of a vent, usually at the back. Both collect dust and airborne grease, and a blocked vent makes the machine work harder and run hotter. A dry brush is enough. Never spray anything into a vent.

How Often to Clean

There is no single schedule, because it depends entirely on what you cook. A useful way to think about it:

  • After every use: basket and crisper plate. Every model in our air fryer guide has both parts dishwasher safe, so this is a two-second decision rather than a chore.
  • After anything fatty: bacon, wings, sausages, skin-on chicken. Wipe the cavity walls and the drawer housing as well, while the unit is still warm. Cold grease is far harder to shift.
  • Weekly: a damp cloth over the interior and the exterior, and a look at the vent.
  • Monthly: the element and the housing floor, as above.

If you own a two-basket model there is twice as much of all of this. That is the honest trade for two zones, and it is worth knowing before you buy one.

Common Mistakes

Steel wool and scouring pads

The single fastest way to ruin an air fryer. Non-stick and ceramic coatings are thin, and once the surface is scratched food welds itself to the bare metal underneath. Cosori specifically markets a ceramic coating on both the basket and the crisper tray; that coating is the thing you are protecting.

Submerging the main unit

The baskets come out and can go in water. The body contains the element, the fan and the electronics, and cannot. Wipe it, never soak it, and keep water away from the vents.

Cleaning it hot

Unplug and let it cool. A warm cavity wipes more easily than a cold one, but a hot element is a burn you will remember. There is a difference between warm and hot, and ten minutes decides it.

Forgetting the crisper plate

The plate sits inside the basket and takes most of the direct grease. Plenty of people wash the basket and put the plate straight back in. Both parts come out; wash both.

Putting it away damp

Water left in a closed basket smells within a day and can mark the coating. Dry each part with a towel and leave the basket out until it is completely dry.

Using oven cleaner

Caustic oven cleaners are formulated for enamel, not for non-stick coatings or plastic housings. No manufacturer in this category recommends them. Dish soap and warm water do the job.

FAQs

Can I put the air fryer basket in the dishwasher?

On every model we compared, yes. Ninja states the baskets and crisper plates are dishwasher safe on both DualZone models; Cosori says the same for its basket and crisper tray; Instant says the same for the Vortex range. Check your own manual, because this is model-specific and a few older units are hand-wash only.

Why is my air fryer smoking?

Almost always grease, not a fault. Fat that has dripped into the drawer housing or baked onto the element burns off at temperature. Clean the housing floor and the coil before assuming anything is wrong with the machine.

How do I clean the heating element?

Unplug it, let it cool, turn the unit upside down so the coil is accessible, and brush the deposits off with a soft non-abrasive brush. Bicarbonate paste helps on anything baked on. Keep liquid away from the electrical housing.

Can I use vinegar?

For the basket and cavity, diluted white vinegar is a reasonable degreaser and rinses clean. Do not use it on the element or leave it sitting on coated surfaces. If in doubt, dish soap is what every manufacturer here actually recommends.

How long should cleaning take?

The after-every-use routine is about two minutes if you do it while the unit is warm. The monthly deep clean is fifteen to twenty. The gap between those two numbers is the entire argument for doing it regularly.
